Your Peonies: A Little Backstory (and How to Wake Them Up)
Peonies in February… we know. We’re just as surprised as you are.
Long story short: another grower is set up for dry storage, which means peony stems
can be held without water for much longer than usual. An export order was cancelled,
and we became the very lucky recipients. And as the saying goes… don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. We certainly didn’t.
Now, a small but important note on care.
When you open your box, the stems may look dry or even a bit sad. Don’t panic. They’re not dead.
They’ve just been resting without water. One of the magical things about peonies is that once they get a drink, they bounce back to life.
How to Care for Your Dry-Stored Peonies
If you’d like to hold them for a little longer, you can delay putting them in water.
If you want them looking their best now, follow these steps:
-
Trim the stems.
-
Place them in fresh, cold water.
-
After 10–12 hours, repeat steps 1 and 2.
-
Repeating step 3 will extend the life of your peonies.
This rehydration process gives the stems the drink they’ve been craving and helps keep your peonies looking gorgeous for as long as possible.
Enjoy this unexpected little gift — we hope they bring you as much joy as they brought us. 🌸
